Dubai keeps a different schedule once the heat goes out of the day. For a good part of the year the evening is simply the most comfortable time to be outside, so families stay out late, malls and souks stay busy well after dark, and the city’s best views come with the lights on.

It suits a lot of different nights. You can spend one on a hotel rooftop above Downtown, another walking the creek in the old town with a paper cup of karak, and a third out in the desert under a proper night sky. Drinking is legal in licensed venues, mostly inside hotels, but plenty of the city’s best evenings involve no alcohol at all.

What Dubai is like after dark

The city splits roughly into two moods. The newer districts along Sheikh Zayed Road, the Marina and Palm Jumeirah are where the big rooftop bars, beach clubs and nightclubs sit, almost always inside hotels or licensed venues. Old Dubai, around the creek in Deira and Bur Dubai, runs on markets, street food, abra crossings and late shopping, and is often livelier at 10pm than at 10am.

Weekends are Saturday and Sunday, so Friday night is the big night out, with Saturday close behind. Many venues also run a busy midweek night of their own.

When to go

The outdoor season runs roughly from November to March, when evenings are mild and terraces, beach venues and seasonal markets are open. This is also when most big events and concerts happen.

From June to September nights stay hot and humid, often above 30°C. Nightlife moves indoors and some outdoor and seasonal venues close or change their hours, so check before you go.

During Ramadan, dates move each year, the city's rhythm changes: eating, drinking and loud music in public during daylight are restricted, and many venues adjust hours or entertainment. Evenings after iftar can be some of the most atmospheric of the year.

Getting around at night

Dubai Metro covers the main corridor from the airport and Deira down Sheikh Zayed Road to the Marina, and runs later at weekends. Check the RTA for the current timetable before relying on it for the way home.

Taxis are metered, plentiful and the simplest way home late at night; ride-hailing apps also work. Distances are bigger than they look on a map, so group your evening by area rather than crossing the city between stops.

Abras, the small wooden boats, cross the creek between Deira and Bur Dubai and are part of the old-town evening.

Staying safe and local rules

Dubai is generally safe to walk around at night, but its rules are strict. Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, the legal drinking age is 21, and being drunk in public or drinking in public places is an offence. Carry photo ID: venues check it at the door.

There is zero tolerance for drink driving. Public displays of affection, offensive gestures and photographing people without permission can also cause trouble.

Dress codes in clubs and upscale bars are enforced. In malls and traditional areas, cover shoulders and knees.
