Panaji, also called Panjim, is Goa’s small capital on the Mandovi river. Come here for an evening built around culture and the river rather than the beach.
The river sets the pace. Sunset cruises leave the jetties with live music and Goan folk dances on board, and the casino boats moored offshore light up after dark. In the old Latin quarter of Fontainhas, the painted Portuguese-era houses look their best in the late-afternoon light, and guided walks run into the early evening.
Panaji is also home to Goa’s biggest cultural events, including the International Film Festival of India in November and the Serendipity Arts Festival in December. Unlike the beach belt, much of the city keeps going through the monsoon.
