Gateway of India

Colaba, Mumbai, India

A 26-metre basalt arch on the Colaba waterfront, unveiled in 1924 to mark the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.

Our take

The Gateway is at its most atmospheric after dark, when it is lit against the harbour. Designed by George Wittet, it mixes Indian, Arabic and Western elements and still serves as the departure point for Elephanta ferries by day. Pair it with a drink or dinner at the Taj Mahal Palace opposite.

Best for: Night photos on the harbour
