Mumbai’s evenings start on the waterfront. As the heat goes out of the day, people head for the sea wall at Marine Drive, the sand at Girgaon Chowpatty and Juhu, and the promenade at Bandstand, and the food stalls along them do their busiest trade of the day.
From there the night splits in different directions. South Mumbai has the grand old hotels, the Gateway of India lit up over the harbour, and the NCPA and Royal Opera House for concerts and theatre. Worli and Lower Parel have rooftop bars and some of the city’s most talked-about restaurants, and Bandra mixes sea-facing bars with a younger crowd.
What Mumbai is like after dark
Mumbai is big and spread out, and traffic shapes every plan. Most people pick one area for the evening rather than crossing the city between stops. Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights, and plenty of kitchens and bars stay open past midnight, so dinner here often starts later than visitors expect.
It is also one of India’s easiest cities for an evening without alcohol. Street food, seafront walks, concerts and theatre fill plenty of nights on their own.

When to go
The most comfortable months for going out are November to February, when evenings are drier and cooler. March to May is hot and humid.
The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings very heavy rain. Seafront walks and street food stalls are less appealing and flooding can disrupt travel, but bars, restaurants and theatres carry on indoors.
Festivals change the city's rhythm. Ganesh Chaturthi, usually in August or September, fills the streets with processions, and Diwali, in October or November, brings lights and crowds. Check the dates for the year you travel.

Getting around at night
Taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the whole city and are the simplest way home late at night. Auto-rickshaws work in the suburbs but do not operate in South Mumbai, so take a taxi or cab there.
The suburban railway is the fastest way to cover long distances, but trains are extremely crowded at peak times and do not run through the small hours. Check the last train before you rely on it.
Traffic is heavy, especially in the early evening. Allow plenty of time between areas and plan your night around one part of the city.
Staying safe and local rules
Mumbai is generally safe for going out at night, and the seafront promenades stay busy late. Keep an eye on your phone and wallet in crowds, at stations and at the busiest food stalls.
Swimming at the city beaches is not advised, and it is especially dangerous during the monsoon. Enjoy the beach from the sand.
Maharashtra sets its own rules on drinking ages and permits, and they differ by type of drink. Carry photo ID, and never drink and drive.
